Cybernetic Forests

One of the missing pieces of any tech conversation is what it means to the humans who use it. One of the people who can answer that best are artists: not just the ones using new tools to make new things, but the people pushing the tools to do things nobody really anticipated.

I’m documenting that, and thinking by making and doing. We focus on a range of technology, mostly AI, and mostly from a critical — but thoughtful and engaged — position.

Some of these e-mails will eventually become blog posts over at Cybernetic Forests, but the ephemera will end up here in the meantime.

What you don’t get

I’m skeptical of hype, PR and market news. I’m uninterested in de facto contrarianism and unexamined trash-talk. I’ll focus on what’s interesting and where it came from.

I don’t link to YouTube machine learning tutorials.

Why me?

I’m a trained journalist, artist, researcher and science communicator who has done weird things with technology since 1997. I teach systems thinking, values sensitive design, and game design to college students, and have a background in media studies and cybernetics.
